Check out the website for Spare Change Theater a project that happens almost every day at Jakmel Ekspresyon. When you wonder where your donations go, you can rest assured that your money goes to give a home to this excellent theater program.
The Spare Change Theater Program at Jakmel Ekspresyon was started by founder Aaron Funk as a response to the needs of the Haitian people. After several trips to Haiti it became clear that the traditional aid cycle here was not really helping the people. Haiti does not need aid, more temporary shelters or half hatched ideas brought here and quickly abandoned by the NGO when the money runs out. Haiti needs a future, needs hope, needs tourism and development. Plainly put, they needs jobs, a home, a decent education and a future to look forward too.
The Spare Change Theater Program offers our student body this hope. By sharing the new skills and outreach to the communities they live in. Many of our students return to their homes and start smaller groups that use theater as a form of expression and tool for education. Ether it be a church, youth group or just plain crackin up with their friends our students end up spreading to all areas of the community.
