Message from the Co-Director

2013 is already giving us a run for our money. It is hard to keep up with the amount of improvements and growth at Jakmel Ekspresyon. Our latest accomplishments include; a new computer lab, new screen printing program, our first ever residency program and strengthening of our administration. With all of these improvements we are still dealing with a lack of funds for our dedicated local volunteers. Badio, the Director of Fine Arts Programming, has moved a half hour out of town to open a new gallery. He spends alot of money just to reach Jacmel and teach his workshops. A small stipend of $350 will help him buy a small motorcycle and reduce his transportation costs. Aaron, the Director of the Spare Change Theater Program only has six weeks a year in the US to make all the money he needs to survive as a volunteer in Haiti. If you would like to help sponsor these full time volunteers so that they can continue to support the community please e-mail me at jakmelekspresyon@gmail.com.

We are proud to announce the addition of a new staff member. Mailé Alphonse is now the acting Administrator of Jakmel Ekspresyon. She plays a vital role for the organization’s administrative needs. In the past, Aaron and Badio worked to support the center administratively and run yearlong programs as well. The work required long hours and was a little soul crushing. With Mailé dedicated to administrative work, Aaron and Badio can dedicate more time to developing their curriculum and more time to developing payed job opportunities outside of JE. The level of personal mental health has increased ten fold in the month and a half that Mailé has been with us. She comes to us with an education in Business Management and experience in project development and implementation through work in the field of women’s equality.

Please help us continue to support the voices of Jacmel, Haiti and give them the resources that enable them to shape their own communities. Visit our Donation page and make a contribution. Even the smallest donations adds hope and resources to our cause. Every donation goes straight to Haiti where it is needed most.

The Haitian people are filled with heart and the world should know and see that good things are happening on a local level.

With a ton of gratitude,

Sue Frame
